How are medical courses structured

Medicine

The 6-year course in medicine at the University of Nis is taught in English. The first two years are spent on theory and pre-clinical subjects, and the last three on clinical practice. The last part of the programme is an internship that lasts for a year. During this time, students take the state exams they need to pass to get their licences.

All parts of the curriculum, like lab work and research projects, are available to international medical standards. During the summer, students in years 2, 3, and 4 have to do internships. Students get an MD degree that is recognised by the General Medical Council in the UK and other major medical groups around the world.

01

Years 1-3 - Preclinical training
In the first part of the programme, students learn the basics of biology and medicine. This helps them prepare for their real-world practice in the following years.

02

Years 3-5 - Clinical Education
The goal of clinical training is to teach students how to diagnose and care for patients. Each student goes over a different set of modules depending on their speciality.

03

Year 6 - Internship
Students get to help actual doctors in a hospital treat patients in real-world situations. Their entire six-year education led to the moment when their theoretical and practical knowledge would be tested in the field.

04

End of year 6 - State exam
There are five parts to the test: one for Internal Medicine, one for Surgery, one for Pediatrics, one for Obstetrics and Gynecology, and one for Hygiene and Ecology. Those who pass get the title of "Doctor" and the Master’s degree.
